I want to go through my photographic archive a little more comprehensively over the coming months and find the pictures especially the portraits which satisfy me the most. I want to explore the unique faces, the personalities, the human, us and time, which are conveyed in that moment when the shutter is depressed. This photograph is a favourite of mine, part of a series of pictures taken one morning in a small village, Sungai Utik, nestled deep in the lush rainforests on the western side of the island of Borneo. I called him the bar man, he was the right hand man of Raymundus the village chief. He was a fabulous character and it comes across in this portrait. We were filming the story of how they had stood alone against developers and loggers for many decades, bravely preserving their ancestral land from destruction.
